I don’t know about other writers, but I require a lot of rituals to get my day started. For example,
Shower (maybe) with special smell-goody shower gel (olfactory stimulation, terribly important).
Grab phone and laptop, make sure I have food for the day, head over to office with Willow, who must have either Squeakosaurus (her purple dinosaur), or Squeaky Chicken to keep her company.
Walk to office, breathing fresh air deeply, aware that I will be locked up for at least four or five hours, if not more.
Upon entering office, adjust shades so as to achieve perfect balance of light and dark. Ideally, it will be raining and very cloudy, but obviously, this isn’t always the case. If it is, however, happy dancing may occur.
Make coffee.
Check plants to see if they need to be watered and/or rotated. My houseplants are very important to me. Plus, this is what I call productive procrastination.
Greet Henry, my iron guard-turtle and imaginary friend.
Hug Booey (see previous blog).
Light lemon-scented candle.
Don shark slippers (terribly fashion-forward).
11. Sit in ridiculously happy polka-dotty chair.
12. And…action.
